Chris Fiore, first deputy superintendent of the New York State Police, said the limousine, which was headed southwest on State Route 30, failed to stop at the intersection. The speed limit on that road is 50 mph, but it was not immediately clear how fast the Excursion was going, Fiori said.
20 people killed in car crash involving limo in upstate New York
The disaster is one of the worst fatal car accidents in recent memory in the area and the worst transportation disaster to hit the Capital Region since the 2005 sinking of the Ethan Allen tour boat on Lake George, NY, which also killed 20 people.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is now investigating the cause of the wreck. State officials said they would not be releasing the names of the victims until autopsies have been completed and the families are notified. State Police have set up a dedicated phone line to assist the family members of the victims in Saturday’s crash, CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reported.
