Whittier Law School
What was the focus of your summer externship?
I conducted a lot of research. My topic was a comparative analysis on anti-bullying legislation between China and the United States. There is not a lot of Chinese law on the subject. I found that Chinese law provided for two real options: parents and educators could send students to work study schools or outright discipline students based on was deemed appropriate by parents and teachers. On the other hand, the U.S. delegates regulation to the states and the states have given a lot of discretion to the school districts and even the criminal system where bullying, especially cyber-bullying, crossed over into the physical realm.
A meeting was recently held here. People discussed what should happen with the legislation. Lunch was provided by the firm.

Zhicheng Public Interest Lawyers (ZPIL) is an umbrella group that encompasses several subsidiary organizations. In 1999, the Beijing Children’s Legal Aid and Research Center (BCLARC) was established, being the first civil organisation in China to specialize in the protection of children’s rights. Over the last 15 years, ZPIL’s services have expanded to include migrant workers' rights protection, farmers' rights protection, women’s rights protection, criminal legal aid and environmental challenges. Each branch of ZPIL operates independently to deal with matters specifically related to its practice area.
My Summer at Zhicheng
So far I haven’t had time to explore Beijing except on weekends, but the excursions I have been on were all wonderful. (I recognize that my list of adjectives for describing this project is limited). My first weekend here, I went to Houhai with another intern, James, and our supervisor. James and I were supposed to go on a trip that weekend to Yanqing, which I hear is very beautiful, but our transportation was cancelled due to rain! I was really upset about that but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. When we decided to go to Houhai instead, the sky was still gray and rainy, but by the time we got there, the clouds had opened up to show a beautiful blue sky (rare in Beijing) that we were able to enjoy, followed by an incredible sunset. We even got to see a rainbow! So I guess the trip cancellation was really a blessing in the skies! Heh, heh, get it?! Sorry, I don’t get too much sleep these days.
On Feb 19, lawyer Zhang Wenjuan visits Xu Haoliang, the UNDP Asia-Pacific Bureau Director, during which Xu contributes some good ideas on how will the Chinese civil society better participate in the South-south cooperation. Xu is the first Chinese citizen that gets this position in the UNDP. He has been concerned about the development of Chinese professionals in the United Nations, and to share his valuable experiences on this topic.

Public Interest Law Center
PILC offers a wide variety of funding opportunities and career planning programs to students and alumni, resulting in the most comprehensive public service infrastructure of any law school in the nation. The culture of public service is pervasive: about half of the first-year class spends the summer working in public interest internships and hundreds of students perform public service in student-run pro bono organizations.
